Josiah Newman is a born and raised Nantucket native who has lived in and around the worlds of woodworking, furniture design, and custom build residential + commercial projects his entire life. After graduating from Nantucket high school and then Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, Josiah returned to the island to work for a design + build firm his father founded in the early 1980s. He gained shop and on-site experience in a variety of roles there ranging from carpentry, woodworking, cabinet maker, and ultimately an architectural designer for the firm.

Josiah left the island to gain more experience and develop his own style by working for an architectural firm and a custom furniture maker in Charleston, SC. When he moved back to the island full-time in 2011, he put all his focus into building a locally owned and grown architectural design + build firm. He has teamed up with his father John Newman (an accomplished architectural designer + builder) and sister Eliza Silva (a highly respected interior designer) to take on a variety of residential and commercial projects across the island.

In July 2015 they broke ground on their new design + build facility, which includes two woodshops, a paint + finish room, print + model shop, showroom, client conference room, and individual design offices for Josiah, John, Eliza and the rest of the team at JNDB.
